EPUB The Voice of Brazil

Book description

The Voice of Brazil is a psychological thriller in which a pro-democracy journalist searches for the government agents who tortured him and murdered his wife in Rio de Janeiro.

Roberto Reis and his wife Maria publish a popular alternative newspaper called The Voice of Brazil. The year is 1970 and the country has been engulfed by a silent wave of terror, in which the military dictatorship has used torture and secret trials to stifle opposition. The Voice of Brazil has managed to allude to these abuses without offending the official censors.

Then one night during a late editorial meeting their offices are raided by the OBAN, Brazil’s secret military police. Their files are confiscated, the newspaper closed, and Roberto and Maria are handcuffed, blindfolded and driven to an abandoned farm house in the countryside.

This scene is all too familiar to Roberto, who has reported on such abductions in his paper. But as a member of the upper class with powerful connections, he never believed he and his wife might join the ranks of the “disappeared.”

After being tortured in the dragon’s chair he is released, but his wife is not so lucky. An adamant pacifist, Roberto is now consumed by rage and hunts those responsible for his wife’s murder. But when he gets them in his sights will he be strong enough - or weak enough - to pull the trigger?

The Voice of Brazil explores the struggle of ideals such as liberty and pacifism against a brutalized society and the effects of torture on the human spirit.
